Port Ellen Distillery

About Port Ellen Distillery:

Port Ellen Distillery stands on the southern coast of Islay, overlooking the waters of Kilnaughton Bay. Originally established in 1825, John Ramsay became the distillery manager in 1836 and went on to play a pivotal role not only in Port Ellen’s success, but also in shaping the future of Scotch whisky on a global scale.

John Ramsay was a relentless innovator. During his tenure, he oversaw significant expansion at the distillery and was an early adopter of new cutting-edge whisky-making technologies of the time. Port Ellen is thought to be one of the first distilleries to run trials of both the spirit safe and the patent still, a precursor to the continuous still used in grain whisky production. Ramsay was also among the earliest distillers to export directly to the United States, played an active role in reforming excise laws and created a weekly steamer service connecting Islay to the mainland.

Port Ellen’s warehouses, the pier, even the roads leading to the distillery bear traces of Ramsay’s influence. But the decades that followed would bring the distillery into a state of flux. After it was acquired by the Distillers Company Limited in 1925, Port Ellen closed in 1930, the first of two long silences. It reopened in 1967, only to shut down again in 1983, a casualty of wider industry decline.

In the years that followed, Port Ellen’s reputation grew as its stock of whisky grew scarcer. Yet for more than forty years, the distillery itself stood quiet. That silence broke in March of 2024, when Port Ellen fired up its stills once more.

The reborn distillery pays tribute to its past while looking firmly to the future. A modern mashup of art and science, it features the world’s first Ten-Part Spirit Safe and is home to the Atlas of Smoke, an ambitious project to map and understand the diverse flavour characteristics of peat smoke, continuing the pioneering spirit that defined its early years, while pushing boundaries at every step of whisky production.

Water for Port Ellen is sourced from Lourin Loch and the barley is peated and malted just metres away at Port Ellen Maltings. The annual output capacity is 1.6 million litres a year through its two sets of stills: the Phoenix stills, creating a refined version of traditional Port Ellen spirit, and the Experimental stills, offering the opportunity to put innovation in practice. The distillery remains focused on traditional methods, but with a forward-looking approach to cask innovation, flavour profiling, and sustainability.

Today, Port Ellen lives again, reborn, reimagined, and ready to write its next chapter.
